Origin of San Pietro in Bevagna is links to the San Pietro apostle's history. The legend, infact, related that during a journey his ship wrecked in the ionicles coasts near the church that is actually situated in the centre of San Pietro in Bevagna. Tired and thirsdy, he drunk in a shaft and near this water fount there was a sculpture of a pagan god (Zeus). He saw the monument and declaimed a prayer. Immediatly the sculpture brokes in pieces and peole (that saw the miracle) was converted to catholicism. You can visit the church (called CRIPTA DEL REDENTORE or RUPESTRE CHURCH).

In San Pietro in Bevagna there are also many beautifuls Towers (80 tower in the salento): TORRE COLIMENA (o COLUMENA), TORRE OVO, TORRE LAPILLO, TORRE BORRACO. The last one is near our B&B.

Distant 45 km there is TARANTO city, famous for the lungomare and the bridge, and ALBEROBELLO, MARTINA FRANCA and LOCOROTONDO famous for the trulli. Also there is GROTTE DI CASTELLANA and the SELVA DI FASANO. Distant only 55 km there is BRINDISI famous for the ancien VIA APPIA , and there are also OSTUNI , CEGLIE MESSAPICA and CISTERNINO salento's towns . LECCE is distant 50 km and is a city artistically very beautiful and have an ancien history (this city is the barrocco 's capital of salento). Distant 12 km there is MANDURIA famous in the world for its red wine primitivo (d.o.c.) , its oil (d.o.p.) and for its ancien messapian monuments : MURA MESSAPICHE, PARCO ARCHEOLOGICO, FONTE PLINIANO, CHIESA MADRE and GHETTO DEGLI EBREI. Distant 30 km,there is FRANCAVILLA FONTANA, with its beautifuls churches . Important is the Chiesa Madre (its cupola is one of hightest salento's churches. There is near also ORIA, an ancien little town . Its street are very small and you can visit the CASTLE of FEDERICO BARBAROSSA . Every summer there is the TORNEO of RIONI.
